Rootz
Rootz is dedicated to dismantling the Family Policing System while also building community-driven alternatives that keep Black families together, heal generational trauma, and resist systemic harm.
Black-owned and women-led in Durham, NC.

OUR VISION
Our communities deserve strong and solid foundations. As a collective space of healing and knowledge, Rootz strengthens that foundation.
We believe that when we are well-educated and self-confident, we are able to operate as our own source of energy and strength, which lies at the roots of a thriving community. Rootz creates a space where people can reconnect with themselves to harness their inner power.

OUR PATH FORWARD
Rootz will be a black owned, woman led brick and mortar bookstore, movement studio and resource center that reminds our communities that Black history did not start in slavery. Being intentional in our development of healthy and strong community solutions birthed the idea of creating space that allows communities to thrive in multiple mediums.
Education
We believe that everyone deserves access to knowledge and wisdom through reading and comprehension.
Yoga, Meditation & Self-Defense
We combine movement practices, mindfulness, and meditation to release negative energies and stored trauma in the body and mind.
Conflict Resolution
Our vision is to reduce stress and violence by holding space for peaceful solutions to personal, financial, emotional, and political disagreements.

We have launched our Rootz programming in Durham, NC. We are actively working to address one of the biggest threat to a strong Black community — Gentrification.
Indy Week recently covered the decline of what was once a strong and vibrant Black community in Durham. Now our beloved Hayti is being bought up by outside developers with no roots to the land they seek to acquire. The Black community in Durham and our allies are saying they no longer want to wait for the promise of urban renewal. We hear them!
